Setting the Stage
North Hollywood gives theater and arts an edge

Nearly 12 years ago, three guys with a vision and strong ties to North Hollywood decided to rename a one-square-mile parcel of the San Fernando Valley neighborhood the NoHo Arts District, a nod to New York's celebrated SoHo.

"We wanted something that would characterize the creative energy of the neighborhood," says Brian Sheehan, a North Hollywood native and a member of that trio. Clearly, there's some truth to the old adage about the power of a name. NoHo has come a long way since its christening and the opening of the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences building in 1991. (Look for the huge Emmy statue set back off Lankershim Boulevard just north of Magnolia Boulevard.)

Starbucks even opened a shop here a few years ago. Sheehan calls this "the real stamp of approval" for the neighborhood bounded by Burbank Boulevard to the north, Camarillo Street to the south, Tujunga Avenue to the west, and Vineland Avenue to the east.

Despite the arrival of the oft-maligned corporate caf, NoHo remains a little gritty. It's like Melrose Avenue 20 years ago, with lots of hole-in-the-wall resale shops and not a Gap in sight. Where it differs from Melrose is in the absence of attitude. Though NoHo is indisputably urban, it has a small-town vice and spirit. And fortunately, the creative energy Sheehan felt more than a decade ago is still palpable.

Hunger Pangs. The Eclectic Cafe, Brian Sheehan's colorful eatery, is probably the most upscale in the neighborhood, but is hardly fancy: Jeans are the uniform. And true to the caf's name, the menu is definitely eclectic. Where else can you find Chinese pot stickers, pizza Margherita, and tostada salad on the same menu? The Caesar salad is solid. Pastas such as linguine with Prince Edward Island mussels, plump shrimp, and tender scallops in a soulful white-wine-and-garlic sauce are generous and well-executed; don't forget to dunk some of the homemade foccacia in the sauce.
